About the Photograph This image was taken from the Skyline restaurant viewing platform, just as the sun broke free of the afternoon cloud cover. Moments later, it dropped beyond the western mountains, so this brilliant sunset panorama was only visible for maybe 15 minutes.
I was standing outside in the biting cold, along with many other restaurant guests, all transfixed by the incredibly colourful transition into night. Occasionally someone would grumble about the cold, pulling their jacket tighter around their neck or thrusting their hands into pockets and shivering despite the many layers of clothing. But no one moved inside until the light faded into the deeper hues of dusk, and the wind became too punishing to tolerate.
I liked that; the contrast of visual stillness amongst a freezing wind that buffeted the rails and made everything feel a little precarious, clinging to the side of that mountain.
In the full resolution photograph, there is a little chapel visible on the hill in front of the distant mountains. Unfortunately, even at that resolution there's not enough detail to form a unique image of that subject. I wish I was a good enough photographer that I could always catch images like this one, but luckily nature gave me something awesome this evening.
